Dave Ronnert

Dave Ronnert is an Australian living in Germany and has been a general creative his whole life. He discovered writing in his mid forties and after writing a few short stories and then a novella, none of which will see the light of day, decided to try his hand at a novel.

On the 2nd of July, I self published my first book, Sanctuary Station – Invasion. The idea came from a random thought I had. “What would happen, evolutionarily speaking, to a colony of humans if they were able to survive on a planet where the natural arms race had gone wildly out of control.”

From there, I developed the Yargans, a Human subspecies who have spent the last 10,000 years or so trying to survive on the planet Yargis. As they’re cut off from the rest of the galaxy, any kind of mining or mass production would be completely impractical as it would simply be too dangerous. They’d need to find a natural form of shelter, so I had their civilisation effectively devolve back to the stone age and live in caves. On top of that, I figured they’d need to be much bigger and tougher than a normal human to survive in this kind of environment so I made them as large as I thought a human frame could possibly manage. My next thought was “What would happen if these Yargans were to encounter the galactic community.”

As introductions between civilisations generally tend not to go too well for the civilisation with the lower technical level, I need things to go horribly for the Yargans, without actually wiping them out. If the Yargans are exterminated on sight, I’d have a mighty short book. Well, you can see what happens to the Yargans in the first book of the Sanctuary Station series, Invasion.
